roommate saving money

So you’ve locked down a seasonal job in a new city, and you’re ready to tear up the town for a few months while making some money. Hell yeah, that’s awesome! But now you have to figure out housing.

There are plenty of options for temporary housing in the city, most of which can be pretty pricey. So you already know what my advice is going to be. Get a roommate!

But getting a roommate for a short term isn’t the most simple task. You need to find someone who needs a roommate for that same specific time as you, with the same price range, and who hopefully isn’t a total weirdo.

Luckily, we’re here to help. Read on and we’ll give you the lowdown on why short-term roommates are awesome, and how to find the ideal one.

Explore The City Together!

If you’re both looking for short-term housing, oftentimes you’re both new to the city. This means you have someone to tear up the town with!

If you’ve been in the same place too long, you can get jaded towards certain places, or be stuck in your same spots. With someone else new to the city, you’re free to explore whatever the hell you want.

Wanna go do some touristy stuff? Go for it! Wanna spend the whole night in a dingy dive bar? No judgement, you’ll probably find me there.

Short-Term Roommates Can Become Long-Term Friends!

It’s not always a guarantee (I’ve had my fair share of horror stories) but finding a good short-term roommate can blossom into a friendship that can last long beyond your stint in the city.

Some of my closest friends are people that I lived with for a couple of weeks (or even a couple days) in hostels. The benefit of living with someone for a short period of time is that you get to learn a lot about them without getting too sick of them.

Short Term Roommates Are A Great Learning Opportunity

Finding an ideal roommate isn’t always easy, especially if you don’t know what your ideal roommate looks like. Having a short-term roommate can help you figure out what you want in a long-term roommate in the future.

Not everyone is going to work out. With short-term roommates, some of the pressure of finding that ideal roommate is out of the window. Are you unsure about living with someone of the opposite gender, or someone with an age difference? Try it for a couple months and see if it works!

You learn a lot about someone when you live with them, and a lot about yourself as well. Maybe you thought you wanted someone super similar to you, and then realized that one of you is enough. Or maybe you accidentally ended up with a douchebag, and now you know what to look for in the future. Either way, you already have your exit plan in place, so you’ll be okay.

Determine Your timeframe, location, and price range

Now that we’ve convinced you that you need a short-term roommate, it’s time to establish some parameters. Figure out how much time you’re going to need a roommate for. Even if your job is only two months, maybe you’ll want to stay an extra month and explore! Or maybe you have a friend you can crash with for a bit, and you only need a month of housing.

Timeframe is going to be the most important thing to establish, but location and price range are also important. If you’re only going to be living in the city for a few months, you want to live in an ideal location. You don’t have enough time to figure out how to get around, or to learn to love a neighborhood that wasn’t at the top of your list.

Go Find That Ideal Roommate!

Once you’ve established your parameters, that’s where we come in! We have search options specifically for short-term roommates so you can stop scouring Craiglist and pinpoint the humans that need the same short-term housing that you do. Don’t waste your hard-earned money on an expensive studio. Find yourself a short-term roommate and thrive during the short time that you’re there.
